Mothering the Mother

Mothering this beautiful mama in labor!

I was raised by a mother who was very organized - A list for everything (and I mean everything), piles around the house (each with a distinct purpose) and a spirit for service. Never once did I doubt that my mother would be there on time; or know exactly what to do; or step up and speak for me when I couldn't speak for myself. She moved through life with a quiet self-assurance. So when a doula client recently told me: "I was especially grateful for how you took care of every little detail during the birth. I knew that I could just focus on what I needed to do, and you would take care of everything else - I didn't even have to think about it," my heart swelled with pride and my eyes with tears. This is perhaps my biggest calling as a doula - What I call "mothering the mother." I want all families that I work with to feel like they don't have any cares in the world besides bringing this precious new life into the world. I see it as my job to reinforce your birth preferences, anticipate your needs before you know you have them and create a safe, comfortable and "organized" birth space. I am there to witness, to hold the space and to provide the gentle guidance and reassurance that allows you to fully embrace this remarkable moment. Thank you to all of the families who have allowed me to "mother" you and for all of those still to come.
