Ever since I first ventured into the world of birth work, it has been my dream to open a space all my own... To be free from the schedules of others (although I am extremely grateful to those who have hosted my classes); to hang my 'shingle;' to express my passion through not only the decor and the splashes of paint on the walls... But through the feeling that those who walk through my doors experience - Hopefully, one of warmth; of welcome; of knowing that they are in good hands. The space needn't be grand or large or located in the trendiest part of town. It just needed to be... Mine. Sprinkled with personal effects and reminders of my personal inspirations (here's lookin' at you kids... and Mom); and dripping with homages to my doula clients who have so graciously allowed me to hang pictures of their sweet, brand-new babies on the walls.
Earlier this year, my dream took shape in the form of a beautiful 425 square foot studio on the northern edge of Burnsville, just over the river from my home in Richfield. As soon as I saw the post on Craigslist, I thought, that's IT. Just big enough. Just cozy enough. Just bright enough. Just far enough from home, but not too far. 190 River Ridge Circle has a wonderful, rich history. It's not your typical dull brick structure; one of the thousands with space available for rent to the highest bidder. Built as an art school in the 1990's, 190 River Ridge has a vibe of creativity emanating through its walls. Although it is no longer a school, the building houses many painters, photographers, videographers, healers, counselors, body workers, and creatives of all kinds. My sweet studio has a loft and floor to ceiling windows/skylights, allowing the outside in and a beautiful view of the city lights sparkling below as evening sets in. I must heap praise on my amazing husband, Travis, who painted 17' walls, assembled furniture, hung window coverings and listened to my nitpicking with nothing but smiles and grace. Thank you, honey! I was so pleased to introduce the space to others with my 'inaugural' HypnoBirthing class in January; it was so helpful to have others experience the space with me, give suggestions, and make my dream a reality. Tears often glistened in my eyes at the end of class. With a deep breath, and a look up to the heavens, I would whisper - "Mom, I did it." I look forward to many more classes, client meetings, events, workshops, and gatherings in my new 'home.' You are welcome to visit anytime - Just call or email ahead! My hope is that, as time goes by, Flutterby will grow and become a place that parents, those in the birth community, and members of the community at large can enjoy for years to come. Cheers!
