FLUTTERBY'S BIRTH STORY
The year 2005 was a transformative one for me. Pregnant with my first baby, I felt like many parents-to-be: How can I make sure that I have the best birth possible? I took a birth class, read every book under the sun, and followed the advice of my midwife. It wasn't until I attended a meeting at the local chapter of ICAN (International Cesarean Awareness Network) that my views on birth really began to take shape. At the urging of my sister, I went to the meeting to become more informed about birth, learn how to avoid an unnecessary cesarean, and meet local midwife Gail Tully, the woman behind Spinning Babies. I soaked in all of the knowledge about fetal positioning and comfort techniques for labor I could, and I carried that with me through the rest of my pregnancy and the birth of my baby. The flame was lit.
Fast-forward to my second pregnancy in 2011. This time I hired a doula, prepared myself and my husband through a private class, and chose a wonderfully supportive birth team. The fire was burning strong now. I knew that, after this baby was born, I wanted to immerse myself professionally in the world of birth!
Soon after my second was born, I started on the path to becoming a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator (LCCE), and was certified in 2012. I felt strongly that I wanted to provide evidence-based, independent, and personalized childbirth education to families in the Twin Cities. What would the name of my business be? It didn't take long to decide. My mother Lynnette passed away in 2011, not long after my daughter Evie was born, and this experience transformed me. My mother loved butterflies, and they were my family's symbol of hope and healing during times of sadness and loss throughout Mom's illness. In many ways, Flutterby (which is a play on the word 'butterfly'), was born out of the grief of losing her. I decided on the name to honor my mother's love of the beauty of the butterfly and the symbol it is of life, birth, transformation, and the journey we all must take from womb to world.
When Flutterby started out, Lamaze classes were small, but cozy. Doula services were soon added. Hypnobirthing classes followed. Over time, I knew that I wanted to make Flutterby not only a business, but also a place. In 2013, that dream was realized when I opened Flutterby's first studio space, and I have never looked back!
