Dance Your Way into a Happier Pregnancy and Easier Birth (oh, and get in shape postpartum, too)!12/20/2013 I asked Brittany Kubricky, Dancing For Birth ™ certified instructor, to tell us a little bit more about her experience with teaching this unique and powerful class to mamas - Jump below the pics for what she had to say! FREE DEMO on 9/28/2015! Dancing For Birth ™ is a truly unique and enjoyable way to exercise in pregnancy and postpartum, connect with other women, and learn helpful positions for labor. Some moms may be nervous if they’ve never really danced before, or they may think it might not be the right choice for them. Good news! You don’t need any dance experience or have to necessarily even like dance to reap the benefits of a DFB series.
I’ve had the chance to see women transform into mothers in some wonderful ways. Sometimes moms come in with no experience and are unsure of their bodies, but after a couple of classes they start to move more confidently and surely. The amazing sisterhood and camaraderie that are created through not only dancing together, but sharing, laughing, and sometimes crying, is inspiring and beautiful. I wanted to take the DFB training and become certified as an instructor because I LOVE dancing. I was able to take the instructor training when I was pregnant with my son, so I’ve gotten first-hand experience in just how much the specific moves we do in Dancing For Birth ™ can help with things like: lower back and hip pain, strengthening your core and pelvic muscles and quicker postpartum recovery. It was so much fun to go back to class after he was born and watch him be soothed by the rhythmic movements and familiar music while he danced with me in a sling or wrap. A class typically lasts a little over an hour, and covers more than just moving your body. We always start and end class with introductions and affirmations, which help to bring up worries, concerns, and stories to share. We review posture, do a quick stretch, and gently start moving. Most of the movements are belly danced derived, but we have some fun with Latin, Caribbean, and African movements as well. We end our dancing with a choreographed “Welcome Baby Dance” and some fun, free, silly dancing. We may spend some time celebrating a mom who is close to her due date, or has recently had her baby, or sharing our birth stories. Dancing For Birth ™ classes can help to build your confidence throughout pregnancy as you learn to appreciate your changing body. A sisterhood is created in class as we spend time getting to know one another, and sharing our thoughts and feelings as we go through this transition together. Relationships often continue after babies are born, and outside of class. The movements in a DFB series have been created to be especially helpful during labor, giving you extra practice and skills to use in your birth. The moves also specifically target your legs, pelvic floor, and abdomen. Having these muscles strong in pregnancy means a quicker recovery postpartum. Not to mention how good dancing and exercise will make you feel, and how great it is for your growing baby! Want to know what moms who have taken Dancing For Birth ™ have to say? Some quotes: Sarah, mom to twins Roland and Mina, says: “The best part is the women I met going to class!!! Talk about a support group! Also the moves I learned really work well for pain relief during, before and after birth!” Shikha, mom to Nina, says: “Love, support, camaraderie, fun, part of being healthy, ease in labor are just some benefits. The best of all is our teacher- Brittany is amazing , down to earth, very pure hearted person. Every pregnant woman should, and I insist should, try Dancing For Birth ™. This is one of the best things I did in my pregnancy.” Heather, mom to Boston and Finnley, says: “It was really nice to get exercise other than walking! I also feel like I’m part of something bigger and it’s not just me and my pregnancy. It’s always nice to see the babies after birth too:) I really feel like it’s helping me get my body back after giving birth too!” Tirzah, mom of Josephine, says: “Dancing for Birth class is a comfortable place to talk about all the odd things that happen during pregnancy and realize you’re not alone! I really needed to be around people that supported my choices and every Monday we are there for each other. I felt ready for birth because each week I prepared and reminded myself that my baby and I are both strong and getting ready to meet each other. I couldn’t have asked for more. Also it just feels soooo good to stretch for an hour… and the music is really fun.” I can’t wait to dance with you! ~ Brittany

I am so pleased to be bringing back the class formerly known as 'Flutterby Lamaze/Flutterby Express!' It feels like coming home in a way, as this was the first class ever offered at Flutterby. As I have expanded my doula services and had the chance to garner feedback from more and more expectant families, I heard one thing loud and clear: We need more options for childbirth education; and we want to know all of the choices we have for ways to accomplish our best birth! The Flutterby Birth Class is inspired by my Lamaze International training, and combines the Six Healthy Birth Practices of Lamaze with wisdom I have garnered through my doula work and additional certifications. I am so excited to bring even more information to families than I ever have been able to before. This includes up-to-date information about the trends at local hospitals and birth centers, as well as a deeper focus on the mind-body connection in birth and how to prepare both mentally and physically for birth. This class is offered in two 10-hour formats: Two weekend days (5 hours each class, for those shorter on time), and four evenings (2.5 hours each class). The weekend format was incredibly popular in the past, and I look forward to once again bringing this option to Twin Cities families! For more information on what is offered in The Flutterby Birth Class, please click here. The first series is scheduled for the spring; but if you are interested in attending class sooner, please contact me and we will work out something that fits your schedule! Happy Birthing! -Erin |
