"We want you and your family to have personal, attentive and dedicated one-on-one care." - Teresa Jarvis, CNM ![]() By Erin Stertz-Follett, LCCE, CD(DONA), HBCE, Owner of Flutterby Birth Services, LLC I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Teresa Jarvis, certified nurse midwife (CNM) from North Memorial Midwifery Care in Robbinsdale. It was so fun to hear about the "new and improved" midwifery services now offered at North Memorial, and how Teresa and the other NMM midwives are working to serve women in the Twin Cities! Keep reading for more information on what North Memorial Midwifery is about and what plans they have for the future. Exciting stuff! Thank you, Teresa! Q: How long have you been a midwife and where did you receive your training? A: I have been a midwife for five years. I graduated from the University of Minnesota. I am a committed provider who provides primary health care to women throughout their lifespan. I offer individualized care, giving personal attention to the woman’s physical, psychological and social well being, from adolescence, birth and throughout menopause. I specialize in Gynecological services including: Contraception counseling, STD counseling and treatment, abnormal menstrual cycles and pre-conception counseling and support. I enjoy taking the time to provides comprehensive and holistic prenatal care and education to help prepare women for childbirth by offering alternative options honoring an individualized and personal experience throughout labor, birth and the postpartum period. Furthermore, I am an advocate for mother/baby bonding at birth and believe that providing a safe, trusting and supportive environment allows women to trust in their own abilities to care for themselves, their children and families. Q: Where did you practice before NMM? A: University Specialists-Fairview University Riverside Hospital and Park Nicollet Clinic-St. Francis Hospital Shakopee Q: Tell me about the other midwives at NMM! A: Diane Banigo, APRN, CNM graduated from the University of Minnesota. We have been working together since she started in July of 2014 at North Memorial. She is an advocate for natural childbirth. She loves sharing the incredible experience of birthing with women and their families. Her additional expertise includes normal and low risk prenatal and postpartum care, family planning, contraception management, acute gynecological concerns, STI screening and treatment, well woman exams and lactation support. Christy Anderson, APRN, CNM graduated from Frontier Nursing University. We have been working together since she started in April of 2015. She respects the normalcy of pregnancy and birth. She believes in holistic women-centered care that incorporates all aspects of the women’s life to provide optimal care. She specializes in providing evidence based care to women through their lifetime from adolescence through menopause. Her additional expertise includes well woman exams, STI counseling with testing and treatment, family planning contraception options and management, pre-conception counseling, prenatal and postpartum care and support to women and their families with lactation support. She has a passion for using integrative therapies and water birth. I am so fortunate to work with two midwives who are dedicated to bringing Midwifery care to the Robbinsdale and the surrounding community. We all share in the same passion as we strive for high standards of care and the importance of maintaining the midwife philosophy. We are very excited to be adding our fourth midwife, Nicole Lund-Uban, APRN, CNM. She will be joining us this fall! Q: What makes NMM unique? What is the model of care? A: Certfied Nurse Midwives are the primary obstetrical providers at North Memorial Medical Center. We work collaboratively with our OB/GYN partners in the outpatient setting to co-manage or refer patients who have high-risk concerns. We also have a unique inpatient collaborative model of care with the presence of a 24-7 OB/GYN physician (laborist) who supports the midwifery model of labor and delivery and allows us to provide the highest level of safety for you and your baby. As a group of midwives and laborists, we fully support physiologic birth. This is evident in our cesarean section rates, which are some of the lowest in the Twin Cities - especially compared to other similar tertiary care hospitals with level 3 NICUs (neonatal intensive care units). This means that we can support the full scope of your possible obstetrical needs - from very normal and low risk up to complicated and high risk. We are prepared to support you no matter what happens during your prenatal or labor and delivery care. Additionally, we have very high rates of trials of labor after cesarean (TOLAC), which we think reflect our unique team and our ability to respond quickly in an emergency – We are more willing to offer trials of labor, as our in-house laborist can manage emergencies if they arise. Our TOLAC rates increased from 28% in 2012 to 38% in 2015. Vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) success rates are also exceptional - 86% in 2012, and currently 100% in 2015! You can have a TOLAC/VBAC with one of our certified nurse midwives (CNMs) with 24/7 laborist back-up. Our CNMs will manage your labor and delivery whether you have had one or two prior cesarean deliveries, making us one of the only (if not THE only) CNM practices in the Twin Cities to offer this option! CLICK HERE to see North Memorial's cesarean, TOLAC, and VBAC rates. North Memorial Medical Center also offers women water immersion therapy in labor and water birth with our CNM team. In the clinic setting, our certified nurse midwives care for women across the continuum of the lifespan – from adolescence through menopause. We provide well-woman care at any age, and also each have some areas of personal expertise including pre-conception counseling, infertility evaluation and contraception counseling and planning. Regarding prenatal care, we spend an extensive amount of time with each woman and her family in education and childbirth preparation. We are personally present with a woman throughout her labor and delivery and closely monitor her care postpartum, including providing lactation support. Individualized care is of paramount importance to us. We want you and your family to have personal, attentive and dedicated one-on-one care. Q: What are the future plans for growth and expansion at NMM? A: North Memorial Midwifery opened in January 2014 with one clinic at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale. We just started seeing patients at two additional North Memorial Clinics in Golden Valley and Brooklyn Park (July 6th, 2015). We also plan to see patients in two other clinics by the end of 2015 (sites yet to be determined), expanding our total reach to five clinics in five different communities... Hopefully one near you! Our hospital services are expanding in the fall of 2015 to offer alternative options for women to enhance their birth experience. In addition to water birth, soon we will be offering nitrous oxide and an on-site doula program. I am very excited that we will be offering EVERY woman a doula on admission to North Memorial Medical Center during labor, delivery and the immediate postpartum period! Q: How can families get in touch with you to initiate care and where are your clinics located? A: North Memorial has several convenient ways to schedule an appointment: BY PHONE: 763-581-CARE (763-581-2273) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week BY TEXT: Use your smart phone to text the word “CARE” to 763-200-5882 to request an appointment at anytime from almost anywhere.
